The second generation of Pokémon games—Gold, Silver, and Crystal—offers a wealth of rare Pokémon and items. A video outlines several methods and glitches that allow players to obtain these coveted items and Pokémon much earlier than the games intend.

Rare Pokémon and Evolutions
These methods focus on acquiring powerful Pokémon and the items needed for their evolution early in your journey.
Steelix and Scizor
You can get these Pokémon before the fourth gym by finding a Metal Coat. One is given on the S.S. Aqua, but you can get a second, earlier one by trading a Dugtrio for a Magneton at the Kanto Power Plant. This Magneton comes holding a Metal Coat. Another fast method is to use the Thief TM, found in the Team Rocket Hideout, to steal Metal Coats from wild Magnemite on Routes 38 and 39, which have a 2% chance of holding one.
King’s Rock Evolutions
A King’s Rock can be found in the Slowpoke Well. A second one can be obtained by using Thief on wild Slowpoke, which have a 15% chance of holding one. This can be done before the second gym.
Other Rare Pokémon
You can find Lapras by surfing in the Union Cave on Fridays. A level 20 Pupitar can also be found at the peak of Mount Silver with a 1% spawn rate.
Friendship Evolutions and Legendary Beasts
These tricks help you evolve Pokémon based on friendship and easily find the elusive Legendary Beasts.
Friendship Evolutions
- Friend Balls from Kurt on Route 42 instantly raise a Pokémon’s happiness to 200, making it very useful for evolving Golbat into Crobat.
- Using X Items in battle raises a Pokémon’s friendship. Using 130 X Speeds, which can be bought at the Goldenrod Department Store, will cap a Pokémon’s friendship in about 15-20 minutes.
- An “AFK” method involves standing in Morty’s gym and continuously walking and resetting the puzzle, accumulating steps that raise a Pokémon’s friendship over time.
Legendary Beasts
To find them easily, fly to Ecruteak City with a level 17+ Pokémon and use a Super Repel. Walk through the grass on Routes 37, 36, and 35. Since the highest level wild Pokémon on these routes is 16, the only thing you’ll encounter is a legendary beast. If you don’t find one, fly back to Ecruteak City, as flying scrambles their locations, effectively resetting their position on the map.
Elemental Stones

Trainer Rematches
In Pokémon Crystal, four trainers offer rematches with a small chance of giving you an elemental stone, but this method is inconsistent.
Time Manipulation
