In the world of Pokémon, collecting items is a core part of your journey. Whether it’s to heal your Pokémon, enhance their abilities, or simply stock up on useful tools, items are essential for success. While some items are easy to find on the ground, others are cleverly hidden from view, requiring you to explore and think outside the box. In Pokémon Crystal, there are a multitude of hidden items that you can only uncover by paying attention to specific locations or by using the Itemfinder—a device that helps locate hidden items throughout the game. If you’re ready to expand your inventory and make sure you’re not missing any of these secret treasures, this guide will take you through every hidden item, from the beginning of your journey to the more challenging parts of the Kanto region. Let’s dive in and find out where you can uncover all the hidden gems!

The Itemfinder
The Itemfinder is an indispensable tool when searching for hidden items in Pokémon Crystal. This key item is awarded by Professor Oak’s aide after you’ve caught at least 30 Pokémon, and it will help you detect items hidden just out of sight. The Itemfinder will make a sound when you’re near a hidden item, but it won’t pinpoint its exact location. Instead, you’ll need to search the area yourself to discover where the item is located. While you won’t need the Itemfinder for every hidden item, it’s particularly useful in areas like the Underground Paths and the Cycling Road, where the surroundings are less obvious. This guide assumes you’ll be using it in certain parts, but for the majority of items, you can rely on your keen observation skills!
Viridian City

Potion
As you leave Viridian City heading north toward the next part of your journey, take a moment to check the small bush just to the left of the exit. This bush is conveniently located next to a passage that you can only access after acquiring the Cut ability. If you haven’t yet reached this point, you can instead access a hidden path directly above the western exit of the city. The Potion is a helpful early item, especially before you have a full stock of healing items.
Viridian Forest

Antidote
Upon entering Viridian Forest from the south, you’ll notice a large tree positioned in the middle of the path just ahead of a Bug Catcher. The Antidote is cleverly hidden on the lower-left corner of this tree. Given the prevalence of Poison-type Pokémon here, this item will be particularly useful in protecting your team from status effects as you make your way through the forest.

Potion
Before reaching the northern exit of Viridian Forest, you’ll encounter one last Bug Catcher. Directly in front of this trainer is a hidden Potion. It’s easy to overlook, so be sure to check the tile closely. This will be an invaluable item for your early adventures, especially if you’re running low on healing supplies after multiple battles.
Mt. Moon

Ether
As you descend into Mt. Moon, after taking the second ladder down, you’ll enter a room with a Team Rocket Grunt. In this room, you’ll also find a platform containing TM01. To the right of this platform, there’s an isolated rock. Inspect the rock, and you’ll uncover an Ether, an item that restores a Pokémon’s Power Points (PP). This item will prove useful in longer battles, particularly in dungeons like Mt. Moon where you’ll face multiple opponents in a row.

Moon Stone
After reaching the area near the fossils at the end of Mt. Moon, head slightly downward, and you’ll spot a narrow opening to the right. At the end of this opening, you’ll find a wall with a hidden Moon Stone embedded in it. The Moon Stone is essential for evolving certain Pokémon, such as Clefairy and Nidorina, making it an important find during your journey.
Route 4

Great Ball
After exiting Mt. Moon from the eastern side, you’ll find a small plateau just ahead. On this plateau, nestled in the center, you’ll discover a hidden Great Ball. The Great Ball is a step up from the standard Poké Ball and will make capturing Pokémon much easier, especially when you encounter rarer or more powerful species on your journey.
Cerulean City

Rare Candy
To the northwest of Cerulean City, you’ll find a house containing a man who discusses the Kanto Gym Badges. Once you enter the house, head through the back door and make your way into the backyard. There, on the right side, you’ll find a hidden Rare Candy. Rare Candies are valuable because they instantly level up a Pokémon, saving you time and effort. This is especially handy if you want to quickly raise one of your Pokémon to evolve or be ready for tough battles.
Route 25

Elixir
On your way to Bill’s house, you’ll encounter a maze of trees. At the western entrance of this mini-maze, go past the hikers and head upward to find a narrow opening between two trees and a wall. Inspect the northern wall at the end of this passage to uncover an Elixir. This item restores all the PP of a Pokémon’s moves, making it a lifesaver when you’re about to face a tough opponent and your moves are running low.

Ether
When you reach Bill’s house, there’s a section of the fence just one tile to the right of the Lass standing by it. Check the fence, and you’ll find a hidden Ether there. Similar to the Elixir, an Ether will help restore PP, but only for a single move, making it a bit more strategic to use.
Underground Path (Route 5-6)

Full Restore
Within the Underground Path connecting Route 5 to Route 6, you’ll find a hidden Full Restore in the second column from the left wall, just before the northern stairs. This is a powerful healing item that restores a Pokémon’s HP to full and cures any status conditions, such as paralysis or burn. It’s especially useful for later battles against tough opponents.

X Special
In the same Underground Path, on the second column from the right wall, you’ll find a hidden X Special. This item boosts a Pokémon’s Special stat during battle, making it a valuable tool for battles where you need an extra edge in dealing damage.
Route 11

Escape Rope
On Route 11, just before reaching the gate that leads to Route 12, look for an isolated tree above the path. Inspect this tree, and you’ll find a hidden Escape Rope. Escape Ropes are valuable items that allow you to escape from caves or dungeons instantly, saving you time when you need to backtrack.
Route 12

Hyper Potion
Finally, on Route 12, which is famous for being the location of the sleeping Snorlax, head to the narrow pathway to the left of the Snorlax’s location. Just past the Snorlax, look for the rightmost tree that sticks out from the lower wall. Inspect it, and you’ll uncover a hidden Hyper Potion. This item restores a substantial amount of HP to your Pokémon, making it invaluable in longer battles or when facing high-level opponents.

Hyper Potion
On the S.S. Anne, head down the right corridor and take the stairs at the end to reach the lower deck. From there, go to the leftmost cabin and check the pillow of the bed. A Hyper Potion is hidden there. Keep in mind that this item can only be obtained while the S.S. Anne is docked, before it sets sail.

Great Ball
Upon entering the S.S. Anne, move down the left corridor and you will find yourself in the kitchen. Search the lower trash can on the right side to find a Great Ball. Remember, the Great Ball cannot be accessed once the ship has set sail.
