Pokémon Gold, Silver, And Crystal Secrets

20 Pokémon Gold, Silver, And Crystal Secrets You STILL Don’t Know You STILL Don’t Know

Pokémon Gold, Silver, And Crystal Secrets

Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue were two of the most successful games for the original GameBoy. So it made sense that Nintendo hired Game Freak to create the sequels. The result was the critically acclaimed Pokémon Gold and Silver. New adventures in new regions excited fans of the series and brought in even more players.

With the new regions came a variety of new Pokémon to catch, including some evolutions and baby forms of existing creatures. They were memorable sequels that have gone down in history as the best sequels in the series. Since their release, Gold and Silver have been remade multiple times and re-released on the 3DS eShop with support from Pokémon Bank. Despite the fact that these games (and Pokémon Crystal that followed) have been around for so long, they still hold many secrets. Whether it’s the Pokémon you can catch, the places you can visit, or the history of the Johto region, Gold and Silver are full of new information. All these years later, here are 20 secrets about Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal that you still don’t know to this day.

20 An Ultra Easter Egg

pokemon gold

Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver were re-released on the 3DS eShop in 2017. Overall, they’re exactly the same games you’d see on the Game Boy. There are some useful differences, of course. First, wireless communication is integrated, allowing for trades and battles with other players. Another difference is quite subtle. Game Freak was very excited about the upcoming release of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. So much so that in one spot in the classic trailer, “Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon” is spelled out in Unown. There are only a few times when the Unown letters are used to hint at future projects, but we’re glad Game Freak went the extra mile here.

Similar to Mew in Pokémon Red and Blue, Celebi in Gold and Silver cannot be obtained by traditional means. This time Celebi can only be caught legally using crazy methods. Previously, this required connecting to the Pokémon Move System. In this way, players got a GS Ball, which was a force to be reckoned with at the time. After a few steps and at least 24 hours, you can encounter Celebi at level 30. In dire need, there are rumors that the legendary Pokémon can be obtained in a similar way to Mew in the original game: this is an impressive glitch that only the most skilled and determined players can successfully pull off.

19 A Celebi-bration!

Pokémon Red and Blue

Just like how Mewwasin Pokémon Red and Blue, Celebi isn’t a vailable in Gold and Silver by playing the game normally.Instead, catching Celebi require savery unusual method. Backthen, it was connected to the Pokémon Mobile System. This process gave the playera GS Ball, which had to be anticipated.

After many steps and at least a day, you’d be able to find Celebi at level 30.But if you really want it, there are rumors of the legendary Pokémon being obtain able using a similar glitch as the one used to get Mew in the original games:acomplexglitch that only the most skilled and determined players could accomplish.

18 Free Baby Pokémon

the Baby Pokémon

One of the biggest innovations of the second generation of Pokémon was the Baby Pokémon. These are pre-developments of existing Pokémon from the first generation. Jynx, Elektrabuzz, and Magmar received these Baby Pokémon. However, they are not easy to find in the wild. There are two ways to get them: through directed breeding and through gifts. Pokémon Crystal allows players to get another egg in addition to the egg containing the Togepi. Any new Baby Pokémon can be hatched from the second egg. However, the result is completely random, so players who want to fill up the Pokédex must put in more effort to succeed. After all, the breeding process is not fast.

17 Legendary Origins

another Pokémon speaks volumes about Ho-Oh.

Entei, Raikou, and Suicine replaced Lavados, Zapdos, and Arktos as the Legendary Gold and Silver trio. These three beasts were commonly found in Ekrutik City before spreading to the Johto region and were only found in the wild. However, later in the Pokémon series, more details about these beasts were revealed. According to legend, Entei, Raikou, and Suicine were once normal Pokémon trapped in a burning building. They all died before the legendary Ho-Oh descended from the sky and gave them new life. In addition to a second chance, they were also given a more powerful appearance and stronger attacks. The fact that they became Legendary Pokémon purely through the power of another Pokémon speaks volumes about Ho-Oh.

16 Trading Up

prehistoric Pokémon

Surprisingly,Generation II didn’t add any new fossil Pokémon. Thus, the only prehistoric Pokémon accessible to Johto residents were Kabuto, Omanyte, and Aerodactyl.Unquestionably, even the most adept trainers found these Pokémon challenging to obtain.

Fortunately, a trainer on Route 14iswillingtomakeatrade. They’ll exchange an Aerodactyl for a Chansey. While Chansey itself is a rare Pokémon, trading one for a Pokémon that was once a fossil is a beneficial deal.Remarkably, this trade can be foundin Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. It’s undoubtedly a worthy trade to consider!

15 Into The Unown

Psychic-type Pokémon

The Ruins of Alph stand out as one of the most enigmatic places with in the Joh to Region. The most intriguing thing to be found there is the Unown. These are Psychic-type Pokémon, uniquely shaped like letters of the alphabet. Their only known attack during a battle is Hidden Power.

As you enter the Ruins of Alph, there are very little messages written on the walls that tell you how to progress. Once the trainer gets more Hidden Moves and specific Pokémon, they can travel to more regions of the ruins and unlock more Unown to capture. Dedicated trainers will likely have captured every single letter of the alphabet. Later on, the “question mark” and “exclamation point” Unown would be added to the roster and available in HeartGold and SoulSilver.

14 A Big Promotion!

poison-type Pokémon

In Pokémon Red and Blue, players were introduced to eight gym leaders in the Kanto Region, a tradition that would be continued throughout the series. Many keen-eyed fans of the first two games would notice an interesting change in Gold and Silver, particularly with the Elite Four.

As you begin fighting your way through the powerful trainers, you’ll end up battling a member who uses solely poison-type Pokémon. His name was Koga, and fans will recognize him as one of the eight gym leaders from the Kanto Region. Clearly, Koga’s technique as a ninja became more effective for him to become a Gym Leader. It’s also worth noting that the Kanto and Johto Regions have the same Pokémon League.

13 Red’s Legacy

spectof Pokémon Gold and Silver

A stand out a spectof Pokémon Gold and Silver is what you can do after completing the main story. In your journeys, you’ll discover Mt. Silver. As you make your way through it, you’ll fight strong, untamed Pokémon until you reach the summit, which is covered in snow.

At the mountain’s highest point, one person awaits an incredible Pokémon fight: Red, the main character from Red and Blue. With aformidable team of Pokémon exclusive to the Kanto region, defeat in ghim willrequire all your skill. What’s intriguing is that he nevers peaks, and his reason for being the re is a mystery. He simply vanishes after the battle. The same applies to HeartGold and SoulSilver.

12 Double Dipping

Legendary Pokémon

Gold and Silver initiated a tradition of show casing Legendary Pokémon on their box art. These cover Pokémon were, obviously, the Legend aries obtainable shortly before the finalgym. However, this often presente dadecision: players could only obtain the Legendary Pokémon from the box art and couldn’t catch the alternative.

With the exception of the remakes, there’s a special case: Gold and Silver.Upon defeating the Elite Four, you can access a particular section of the Johto Region. This allows you to catch either Ho-Oh or Lugia, which is version-dependent.However,they differs lightly as their levels vary.Regardless of which you encounter, bring plenty of Ultra Balls for the encounter.

11 A Whole New World

Pokémon games feature

Most Pokémon games feature only a single region, but Gold and Silver truly stand out.The segamesare not just sequels to the original generation;they’re a substantial improvement. After defeating the Elite Four, you’ll discover a different path to explore. This leads directly to the familiar Pallet Town, starting a fresh adventure.

Gold and Silver present a fully traver sable Kanto Region.Though not an exactreplica of Red and Blue’s map, it provides extensive new content. All the towns from the previous games are present, and you can battle that region’s eight gym leaders.Only after over coming all of these strong trainers can you as cend Mt. Silver and battle the trainer Red.

10 Safari Zone In Construction

Pokémon thereby fishing

The Safari Zone debuted in the initial two games. It was a spot where you could capture uncommon Pokémon unavailable elsew here.Later install ments in these ries brought it back, let ting players find creatures unusual to that area. It was also intended to be in Gold and Silver.

unfortunately, time limitations meant the Safari Zone wasn’t included in the Johto Region.Theare a was sufficiently developed;its code is present in the game and can be accessed via hacking. However, you can only catch Pokémon thereby fishing.Traversing tall grass is ineffective. It’s ashame it wasn’t implemented, thought he entire Kanto Region is available, so it’s not a big loss!

9 The Secret Son

 Pokémon from Professor Elm's Lab

WhileBlue/Gary was quite an irritatin grival in the initial two games, Gold and Silver were ready to uptheante. Introducing the trainer called Silver, Game Freak crafted the most detestable rival in the series’history. Silver was heartless, engaged in various misdeeds, and even pilfered his starter Pokémon from Professor Elm’s Lab.

It’s clear that Silver’s actions stemmed from his genes, since his father was Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket.Although, Silver’s relationship with his dad was strained, and he didn’t fully support his views. However, the similarities in their conductare undeniable.Appearance-wise, they were quite different. Silvers ported vibrantred hair.

8 The End Of Team Rocket

pokemone The End Of Team Rocket

The villains from Red and Blue resurfaced inGold and Silver, though things weren’t quite the same. They weren’t as formidable as before.Infact, Team Rocket was considerably weaker, and their schemesless elaborate in the Johto Region. They pilfered some Slowpoke tails and seized control of a radio station, but that was essentially it.

This shift happened because the group was dealt a major blowin the initial games. Giovanni went into hiding, and Team Rockets plintered. Those most devoted attempted to resurrect it in the Johto Region, but with minimal achievement.Soon after, the trainer Gold foiled the irambitions, leading them to permanently dissolve the team.

7 Bringing Psychic Balance

Game Freak structured Pokémon

Initially, Game Freak structured Pokémon using types, each with strength sand weaknesses. For Psychic-type Pokémon, Game Freak devised atype to counter it:theGhost-type.Yet, the singular Ghost Pokémon in the first generation was also a Poisontype, leaving them susceptible to Psychic attacks.

Entering generation two, Psychic-types remained some what overpowered, requiring Game Freak to find afix. They introduced two types to address this:Steel and Dark. Steel possessed strong defense against psychic, and Dark was highly effective. With these additions, the dominance of Pokémon like Alakazam and Mewtwoin battles would belessened.

6 Bowing Out Early

the initial planfor Pokémon Gold and Silver

For game or film development, many creators believe that it’s important to step away at an opportune moment,so the franchise concludes at it speak. That was the initial planfor Pokémon Gold and Silver. After the original two games achieved great success, Game Freak aimed to make a sequel, give proper finality to the previous events, and then conclude the series

Gold and Silver did even better than Red and Blue, prompting Nintendo to change their strategy. Pokémon is still one of their biggest franchises, and it’s not showing any signs of slowing down. The second we get any news about a Pokémon game on the Nintendo Switch, everyone will go crazy.

5 It’s His Mother’s Name!

InPokémon games, you can customize a few things:your character, your rival, and your Pokémon.Although this doesn’t offer extensive personalization, it lets you change the essentials. However, what if we told you that players of Gold and Silver were originally supposed to name their mothers?

Game Freak disclosed that players were intended to name Gold’s mother, but it was removed, considered unimportant to the game. They likely didn’t want players naming her something like”Martha”and leading to anawkward friends hip between the player and Silver.Jokes aside, it’s a fine idea, but we’re not disappointed it was removed.

4 Pokémon 2

Pokémon games are famous for launching two versions simultaneously. This promotes player interaction and the forging of bonds through trading.Yet,this wasn’t the original intention for Gold and Silver. Game Freak originally aimed to make one single game, acting as a direct continuation of the Kanto Region storyline.

The game was initially going to be titled Pokémon 2,explicitly sign aling a sequel rather than a fresh experience. But, they acknowledged the effectiveness of thedual-version strategy and chose to apply it again,a spiring for even great ertriumph.

3 Shiny Charizard’s Design

A highly sought-after shiny Pokémon is shiny Charizard. This is because Charizard is a beloved Pokémon, and its shiny form transforms it from orange and blue-green to black and red. Many devoted players will breed Charmander and Ditto for extended periods, hatching eggs with the goal of obtaining a shiny.

When shiny Pokémon were introduced in Gold and Silver, Charizard originally had a different color scheme. It was purple and green,so trainers wouldn’t be as eager to find one. This brings up an interesting point about shiny Pokémon: why did Game Freak use unattractive colors forsome? Many shiny Pokémon have unappealing color palettes.

2 Exclusive Sprites

Pokémon sprites have historically been updated with each new installment,as a way to demonstrate advancements in the games. However, this practice is likely ending with the switch to full 3D models.

An interesting approach was taken with Gold and Silver.Rather than sharing sprites, these version shad unique art work. This was to emphasize that they were distinct titles, beyond just a title change and different mascot. While it’s a design choice we would’ve welcomed back in future releases,it’s unfortunately no longer feasible for Game Freak toimplement.

1 Only On The Game Boy Color

Following the popularity of Gold and Silver, Game Freak chose to build on it with a complete version, similar to how Pokemon Yellow expanded on Red and Blue. This new installment was called Pokémon Crystal, and prominently featured Suicune as its cover Legendary. While there were numerous changes from Gold and Silver, one particular aspect made it unique: it was exclusively a Game Boy Color title.

This meant that anyone who owned a Game Boy,experienced Gold and Silver, and wished to play Crystal, would have to spend extra to buy a Game Boy Color to do so. To be fair, the game’s car tridge was a transparent blue, and it’s still one of the most visually appealing Game Boy cartridge sever made.
