The Sky Pillar is a mysterious tower home to the Legendary Pokémon Emerald Rayquaza. You’ll need to visit it to advance the main storyline and can return later to capture Rayquaza. Follow these steps to reach the Sky Pillar successfully.

1. Begin in Sootopolis City
To start your journey, head to Sootopolis City—a crater-like town accessible only by Surf and Dive. You’ll need the Rain Badge and HM08 (Dive) to get there. If you haven’t reached Sootopolis yet, progress through the story until you do.
2. Find Wallace in the Cave of Origin
Wallace, the Sootopolis Gym Leader, plays a key role in guiding you. He’s not in the Gym initially—you’ll find him near the Cave of Origin. After the Legendary Pokémon Kyogre and Groudon begin their clash, Wallace appears here to help resolve the crisis.
Talk to him, and he’ll mention Rayquaza, who resides in the Sky Pillar. He’ll then grant you access to the tower by unlocking it.
3. Prepare Before You Travel

4. Surf Toward Route 131
From Pacifidlog Town, Surf east until you reach Route 131. You can get to Pacifidlog by heading west from Slateport City and navigating the water routes. Follow the current and watch for hidden paths.
Once on Route 131, head to the northern side to find a cave-like structure partially obscured by rock formations.
5. Locate the Entrance to the Sky Pillar
You’ll find the Sky Pillar’s entrance on a small island just north of Route 131’s main water path. If you miss it, double back and look near the tall cliffs. Once Wallace has unlocked it, the door will be open, allowing you to enter.
6. Climb the Tower Carefully
Inside the Sky Pillar, you’ll face wild Pokémon like Golbat and Claydol, and slippery cracked floors. Move carefully to avoid falling to lower levels. The tower has multiple floors, each requiring navigation strategy.
If you fall, you’ll need to start climbing again. Using a Mach Bike can help you cross cracked tiles without falling.
7. Awaken Rayquaza
At the summit of the Sky Pillar, you’ll find Rayquaza peacefully resting. Approach him, and a cutscene will trigger where Rayquaza flies off to Sootopolis City to stop the battle between Kyogre and Groudon.
This event advances the storyline and lets you progress in the game.
8. Return to Catch Rayquaza Later
After Rayquaza intervenes in Sootopolis, you can return to the Sky Pillar at any time to battle and catch him. This time, bring Ultra Balls, Timer Balls, and a team with status-inflicting moves like Sleep or Paralyze.
Rayquaza is at Level 70, so prepare well—it’s one of the strongest Legendary Pokémon in the game.

Use Repels to avoid constant wild encounters in the tower.
Bring your Mach Bike to cross cracked floors quickly.
