Rock Smash (HM06) is a Hidden Machine move required to break cracked rocks blocking your path in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. It’s also useful in battle for lowering the enemy’s Defense stat. This guide covers how to obtain and use Rock Smash in both the original Pokémon Ruby and its remake, Omega Ruby.
Method 1: Getting Rock Smash in Pokémon Ruby
Step 1 – Travel to Mauville City

Head to Mauville City by traveling north through Route 110. You’ll find a bustling town with a Bike Shop, a Poké Mart, the Mauville Gym, and more.
Step 2 – Locate the Gray House

Once you’re in town, go toward the center. From the Poké Mart, walk right and look for a gray-roofed house. It’s directly next to the mart. (Tip: You can also grab an X Speed hidden near the southern map board near the bike racks.)
Step 3 – Speak to the Rock Smash Dude

Enter the gray house and talk to the NPC seated at the table. He introduces himself as the “Rock Smash Dude.” He’ll give you HM06 Rock Smash for free — no conditions required!
Method 2: Using Rock Smash Outside of Battle
Step 1 – Defeat Wally at the Gym Entrance

Wally will challenge you to a battle when you approach Mauville Gym. He only has a Level 16 Ralts, so it’s an easy win. Once you beat him, he’ll leave, giving you access to the Gym.
Step 2 – Defeat Gym Leader Wattson

Wattson is the Electric-type Gym Leader. Navigate through the gym’s electric barrier puzzle by stepping on lightning bolt switches to unlock pathways.
Step 3 – Get the Dynamo Badge

After defeating Wattson, he will reward you with the Dynamo Badge and TM34 Shock Wave. This badge officially lets you use Rock Smash outside of battle to break cracked boulders and access new areas.
Method 3: Getting Rock Smash in Omega Ruby
Step 1 – Visit the Mauville Gym Area

In Omega Ruby, go to Mauville City and head toward the Gym area near Route 111. You’ll find Wally and his uncle standing nearby.
Step 2 – Battle Wally

Wally challenges you to a short battle. Just like in the original, he uses a Ralts. Win the battle to continue.
Step 3 – Get HM06 Rock Smash

After the battle, Wally will leave with his uncle. As thanks for helping him grow stronger, Wally’s uncle will hand you HM06 Rock Smash. No house-hunting needed in this version!
Conclusion
Whether you’re playing the original Pokémon Ruby or the remake Omega Ruby, getting it is a straightforward process. In the original, look for the Rock Smash Dude in Mauville. In the remake, defeat Wally and speak to his uncle. Don’t forget: you’ll need the Dynamo Badge to use the move outside of battle. Once unlocked, Rock Smash becomes essential for exploration and progress!
